Meanwhile, Intel's response won't come until the first quarter of 2021 when its Rocket Lake chips blast off. That makes it hard to predict how pricing will shake out over the next months as supply normalizes. History indicates that, given sufficient supply, AMD's processors typically retail for far less than the official price points. Given the 10700K's low price point, it makes a solid value alternative - just be aware that you'll sacrifice performance.ĪMD's premium could be a disadvantage if Intel becomes more aggressive on pricing, but AMD's suggested selling prices rarely manifest at retail, and continuing shortages have found Ryzen 5000 chips selling far over recommended pricing. Given its other deficiencies, we don't see Core i9's extra threaded horsepower wooing away many Ryzen 7 5800X shoppers.ĪMD's Zen 3 suffers from a noticeable gap in its product stack: Based upon product naming alone, it appears there is a missing Ryzen 7 5700X to plug the $150 hole in the stack, but we aren't sure if AMD will actually bring a 5700X to market. For now, that gap allows the $374 Core i7-10700K to weigh in as a cheaper alternative to the 5800X, but you'll make plenty of tradeoffs for the lower price point. The aging Skylake microarchitecture doesn't have enough gas left in the tank to match the Ryzen 7 5800X's stellar performance in gaming or lightly-threaded work, but it does offer roughly 3% more performance in threaded performance. This chip serves as the gaming equivalent to the $490 Core i9-10900K and is $10 cheaper than the Ryzen 7 5800X. Intel's $440 Core i9-10850K comes into the picture with ten cores and 20 threads. The Core i9-10900K doesn't offer any more performance in games at stock speed and even when massively overclocked isn't worth the extra cash and nothing Intel has can match it in Wolfenstein Youngblood either.AMD Ryzen 5000 Series Processor Competition Zen 3 Ryzen 5000 Series Processors In fact I'd go as far as saying the Ryzen 7 5800X is a good upgrade from the Ryzen 7 3800X too, especially if you have a powerful graphics card and like to game at high frame rates. It's fairly clear, then, that AMD has a winner on its hands with the Ryzen 7 5800X given it massively outperforms the Ryzen 7 3800X at nearly every turn, offering huge gains in games and content creation. If anything, AMD has understated the performance gains on offer from its Zen 3 CPUs, or at the very least, enthusiasts like myself weren't expecting such huge increases. Core i9-10900K: Is Intel Finally Beaten? By Antony Leatherįinally, power consumption and the test system drew just 237W under load at stock speed, which is nearly 100W less than the Core i9-10900K and on par with the Ryzen 7 3800X despite offering huge performance advantages across the board. The overclocks for the other CPUs I've listed are: I overclock each processor where possible so enthusiasts can see how much extra performance they can gain from doing this and you can see these results in the graphs. Corsair 3600MHz Vengeance RGB Pro memory.Corsair HydroX water-cooling components including two 240mm radiators per test bench.Barrow Rhopilema water-cooled test bench.Motherboard: MSI MEG Z390 Ace, MSI MEG Z490 Ace Motherboards: MSI MEG X570 Unify, Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master (Ryzen 9 5900X and 5800X) I'd like to thank Watercooling UK, Barrow and Corsair for supplying the water-cooled parts of my test systems, Corsair for also supplying the memory and power supplies, MSI for supplying the motherboards, Nvidia the graphics cards, AMD and Intel the CPUs with the latter also supplying the M.2 SSDs. I've re-tested every single processor in the graphs so all the results are comparable and what you can expect from a new system. In short, their results maybe invalid not representative of real-world performance. This is all essential as they include the latest security fixes and performance enhancements so I'd be very wary of any benchmarks out there that do not specify this aspects of their test systems. My test systems now use Nvidia's RTX 3080 graphics card, the latest October 2020 Windows update 2009 plus the latest drivers, Windows updates, security fixes and BIOS versions as of 1st November 2020.
